The purpose of CalGeo’s Student Outreach program is to promote geotechnical engineering to civil engineering students at California colleges and to create an avenue for CalGeo member firms to hire interns and employ graduating students who have participated in their chapters.
Our student outreach committee goals for 2008-2009:
To pursue seven more California schools in determining if CalGeo student chapters can be formed. The committee will be increased by assigning student liaisons to each student chapter to promote the goals and purpose of the student outreach committee. The liaisons will be responsible for oversight of their student chapters and to provide assistance in obtaining speakers and setting up TechTrips. The liaisons will also communicate to the student officers that a poster session is scheduled at CalGeo’s annual conference and that the student registration conference fees will be waved if they present a poster at the Outstanding Project Awards luncheon.
Our student outreach committee long term goals:
To sponsor student chapters at all California engineering departments with at least 100 students within 3 years. Each student chapter will have an active group that has monthly speakers that promote geotechnical engineering and perform at least 2 TechTrips a year that will interface students with CalGeo member firms. This will also allow students to obtain internships and employment with member firms. The committee would like to have each school send 2 students to present a geotechnical related poster at our annual conference and then have one outstanding poster recognized at the Outstanding Project Awards luncheon by presenting an award to the winner. A very long term goal would be to have each school compete in an annual contest that is judged by CalGeo members in some geotechnical engineering competition that requires the testing or construction of some project.
The Student Outreach Committee is currently seeking members from member firms who are interested in volunteering some of their time to help proceed with the committee’s goals. Please e-mail John Hoobs at hoobs@geoconinc.com to let him know of your interest.
