For the last two years, CGEA has made an effort to recognize projects with smaller- (normal) sized budgets. In the past, many of the winners have been very large projects with gargantuan budgets. Thus, CGEA has been successful in attracting submissions of projects that are indeed outstanding, but in the past might not have been considered for an award, when compared to the larger submissions.
This year, the awards committee awarded two Outstanding Project Awards, plus a separate award for the smaller-project category, and two honorable mentions.
Company:
Fugro West, Inc.
Project Name:
Chorro Creek Bridge Project; Morro Bay, California
The first award was presented to Fugro West, Inc. for their Chorro Creek Bridge Project. The project was completed for the City of Morro Bay. The general contractor was Nick E. Pokrajac, and the project civil engineering consultant was Boyle Engineering of Sacramento.
The project involved the innovative use of stone column ground improvement, lightweight cellular concrete fill and geosynthetic reinforcement, to overcome the soft soil conditions (a swamp) along the bridge alignment. The project design and construction teams had to work in an environmentally sensitive site under an extremely tight time constraint. The new bridge prevents future flood-related road closures that have plagued the roadway in the past.
Greg Denlinger accepted the award for Fugro West, Inc.
Company:
Kleinfelder, Inc.
Project Name:
Roseville Parkway Extension Project; Roseville, California
Kleinfelder, Inc.s Roseville Parkway Extension Project in Roseville, California was selected to receive an award. The work was performed for the City of Roseville. The general contractor was Washington Infrastructure and the civil/structural engineering consultant was URS Greiner.
The project involved the construction of two bridges, a 50-foot-high embankment over a closed sanitary landfill, a 50-foot-high mechanically-stabilized earth retaining wall, a 50-foot-high 1:1 geogrid-reinforced embankment slope, as well as the repair and replacement of monitoring wells within the landfill. The geotechnical engineering investigation included subsurface exploration through the landfill materials and environmentally sensitive areas. Kleinfelder successfully coordinated their efforts with two resident engineers as well as two prime consultants to the City of Roseville. The project resulted in the completion of necessary cross-town access in a rapidly developing area.
Elizabeth Smith and Lewis Reagan received the award on behalf of Kleinfelder.
Company:
Goffman, McCormick & Urban
Project Name:
Hotel Del Coronado Seismic Renovation; Coronado, California
Goffman, McCormick, and Urban were selected to receive an award in the small project category for their work on the Hotel Del Coronado Seismic Renovation. The project was performed for Destination Hotels and Resorts. The project structural engineering consultant was Degenkolb Engineers. Total project fees were less than $30,000.
The project included a seismic hazard analysis to evaluate the potential for liquefaction, seismic settlemen,t and lateral spreading. Existing foundation systems and mitigation systems evaluated included spread footings, counterfort retaining walls, piles, piers, dead-man soil anchors, tie backs and mini-piles. The hotel remained in operation during the investigation and retrofit construction. Due to difficult access conditions, subsurface investigation included hollow-stem drilling, bucket auger drilling, rotary wash, tripod-mounted drilling, hand exploration, and CPT. The project resulted in the preservation of an historic 112-year-old structure, including the unreinforced masonry smokestack.
Greg Silver received the award on behalf of Goffman, McCormick, and Urban.
Honorable mention awards were presented to PSC Associates for their work on the San Francisco International Airport New International Terminal Complex and to Youngdahl Consulting Group for their work with naturally-occurring asbestos mitigation during the construction of a large residential lot in El Dorado County.
